Carol Lynn Pieper Cancer Survivor |
What was your first thought when you heard those devastating three words: "You Have Cancer"? Are you kidding me? Not again! What am I going to do, I am going to die? I have no insurance! I lost my health insurance when my husband died. For me the first 30 days was so busy I did not have a moment to think. There was no time to panic so much to do with Doctors appointments, surgery (mastectomy), port implantation and trying to find groups that would help cover my procedures. I was diagnosed the Monday before Thanksgiving so it was busy with the holidays. |
How did you cope with the images of how you were going to look after treatment and surgery? Many thought I would have difficulties losing my breast since I had modeled professionally. My thought was "it's" cancer get rid of it. I was taken back when I had guest visit me a few hours after my mastectomy, and I took it upon myself to lift my hospital gown to show her daughter what my scars looked like. What methods did you use to get your husband and family to a level of comfort to discuss and embrace your cancer? I was very honest with my children about my diagnosis and surgery, especially since we had already been through this once with my husband. We are a very close knit family and we cherish everyday knowing life can change in any moment. Has cancer treatments affected or enhanced your intimacy with your husband? I have met only one man that was not affected by my scars. We took pictures topless so we could educate couples that you can still be sexy after breast cancer. Steven came up with a caption for the pictures "She doesn't have breast and I don't have 6 pack abs and she loves me anyways" He loves to tell me of survivors that she has other parts that work. How is your life as a cancer survivor? My life is full, I'm writing a book and also competing in the American Renaissance Pageant June 18-20th 2009, proving to women that I can win a pageant without breast. Competition is all about what are you doing to make a difference in your community. |

Today, what inspires you? My children have been through so much and I admire their strength. They have already lost one parent and now they are helping me battle breast cancer. I'm inspired to give back to the community, since my husband died in 1995 I have given free facials and eyebrow replacement (permanent make up) to women that are going through in cancer treatment. They are always happy to see me and ever happier when they leave feeling revived. Life is good! Please lend your "Jewels of Wisdom" for other women who have just been diagnosed.
